You aren’t going to get a promotion if you are feeling like there just isn’t enough time in the day to do everything. In order to be ready for that promotion, you have to be in control of your day and fiercely guard your time.
It all begins with these 8 ultimate secrets that have really helped me work smarter not harder. Now, I’m not saying I’m perfect, actually, I’m far from it and do feel the grind of life-bearing down on me from time to time.
But what I do know is this, when I incorporate all of these 8 ultimate secrets to work smarter, not harder, I feel like I’ve got it together girl!
So, today I’m going to share my 8 ultimate secrets to work smarter not harder.
1 | DO THE 3 MOST IMPORTANT TASKS EACH DAY
Is your To-Do list pages and pages long and you feel like there is no way you can get everything done?
You are probably right! No-one can complete 50 tasks a day – unless you are Wonder Woman.
From your list, identify the 3 tasks that are important and focus on completing those tasks only. I found that once I had everything written down in a list, I could clearly identify what was most important, and could manage others expectations of what was achievable.
2 | ALLOCATE TIME TO BATCH EMAILS
Oh, how this simple little technique has stopped email overwhelm in its tracks.
Instead of constantly reading emails every time an email arrives in your inbox, allocate chunks of time to specifically read and respond to emails during the day. Just like any other meeting, schedule time into your diary each day to deal with that overflowing inbox.
Your inbox will be clutter free in no time and you won’t be working so hard to keep your inbox empty.
3 | REDUCE THE CLUTTER
Take some time to clean up your workspace so you can work smarter as clutter is a total productivity killer.
If you’re disorganised, everything competes for your attention; papers on your desk, inbox overflowing, notifications on your phone going every few seconds. It makes it hard to work and it also influences co-workers perception of you.
A messy desk never got anyone promoted but having clear goals will set you on the right path.
4 | CREATE A MORNING ROUTINE
A morning routine sets your day up for success as what we do in the morning, sets the scene for the day and in turn, the quality of our life.
Instead of dragging my lazy ass out of bed in the morning I look forward (actually REALLY look forward) to getting up early, as the next two hours are jam-packed with things I love doing.
Writing in my journal, eating a healthy breakfast and working out. These three things alone, give me so much joy, it’s easy to jump out of bed with bounds of energy each morning.
5 | DITCH PERFECTION
Stop trying to be perfect and focus on doing the best job you can with the time and resources that you have.
Taking imperfect action creates momentum and will give you the confidence to keep moving forward. Done is better than late and over budget.
6 | TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
There’s nothing more powerful than tracking your progress in a journal. To me, a journal is one of the best tools you can have in your career journey.
Each morning and evening take a few moments to write about what went well, what you are grateful for, and how you can do better tomorrow.
It’s an unbelievable process that keeps me grounded, motivated and honest with myself. It’s the one thing I do when I wake up and just before I go to bed every night!
7 | STOP CARING WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF YOU
Every once in a while, it can be difficult to receive a nasty comment or fall prey to caring what people think of you. You may just want to please someone, hoping to get their approval.
But what matters most, is what you believe not what they think.
Just be yourself as the people who care about you don’t need an explanation.
8 | GIVE YOUR WORKSPACE A FACELIFT
40+ hours a week at a dull, lifeless desk. No thank-you!
After I gave my work desk a little love and added a nice lamp, a plant and cute crystal trays for my lipsticks, it felt more welcoming and a lot more like home. It certainly helped me be more productive being in a space that I enjoy.
If you feel you are working so damn hard but not seeing any results, give one of these secrets a test run! By batching emails and ditching perfection if can totally revamp your day and positively affect your career.
Now, I’d love to hear from you!
